The catecholamines in the pulmonary arterial pressor response to acute hypoxia.

چکیده
A mioderate reduction in the oxygen content of inspired air elicits an increase in the pulmonary arterial pressure in animals and man (1-5). It has been suggested that the catecholamines may be involved in this pressor response (6, 7). However, it is uncertain if this hypothesis applies to the effects of tolerable levels of hypoxia in man, since the experimental evidence for enhanced adrenal activity derives exclusively from observations made during severe hypoxia and asphyxia in animals (8-17). The present study attempted to assess the role of the catecholamines in effecting the pulmonary arterial pressor response to acute hypoxia in man. To supplement these observations on man, experiments were performed on reserpinized dogs to determine whether the pulmonary arterial pressor response to acute hypoxia persists after depleting the pulmonary vascular nerve endings of norepinephrine.

Pharmacological agents that block or potentiate the effects of naturally occurring vasoactive substances were used to try to determine which substance, if any, mediates the vasoconstrictor response to acute alveolar hypoxia in isolated rat lungs. Isolated and ventilated lungs of rats were perfused at 37°C with homologous blood at constant-volume, pulsatile inflow, and pressor responses to brief...

Objective(s): The present study was aimed to investigate the influence of thoracic epidural blockade on hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension in rats. Materials and Methods: Forty eight Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 equal groups, named normoxia hypoxia hypoxia/ ropivacaine and hypoxia/saline. Animals were placed in a hypoxia chamber and instrumented with epidural catheters at the t...
متن کاملThe Role of Anion Exchanger on Pulmonary Vascular Response to Sustained Alveolar Hypoxia in the Isolated Perfused Rabbit Lung
Background: Some respiratory diseases may induce alveolar hypoxia thereby hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV). However, the mechanisms of this physiologic phenomenon are not fully understood. This study was the first to investigate the role of anion exchanger in sustained HPV.Methods: Experiments were performed in the isolated perfused rabbit lung. After preparation, the lungs were divided...
متن کاملRole of Histamine in Hypoxic Pulmonary Hypertension in the Rat
The present investigation was undertaken to see if any of the naturally occurring vasoactive substances was likely to act as a mediator for the pulmonary vasoconstrictor response to acute alveolar hypoxia. Rats were treated with agents that deplete local stores of vasoactive amines or inhibit their synthesis. Lungs from these animals were isolated, ventilated, and perfused with homologous blood...
متن کاملA study of the mechanisms involved in the pulmonary arterial pressor response to hypoxia.
The mechanisms underlying the pulmonary arterial pressor response to hypoxia have been investigated by studying specimens of pulmonary and systemic vascular smooth muscle and the isolated pulmonary and systemic circulations. Hypoxia caused a unique and reversible loss of potassium and gain in sodium by pulmonary arterial smooth muscle that did not occur in pulmonary veins or systemic arteries. ...
